M-net, miecom bring fiber optic internet to Altenmünster, Germany
Bavaria's fiber optic provider M-net is building a fiber optic network in Altenmünster in the Augsburg district together with the regional network operator miecom-Netzservice.
The municipality, miecom and M-net have now concluded a corresponding cooperation agreement. Thanks to the fiber optic connection to homes and offices, residents and local companies will benefit from bandwidths of up to 1 gigabit per second (= 1,000 Mbit/s). The expansion is supported with funds from the Bavarian gigabit guidelines.
With the signing of the contract, the basis for the fibre-optic expansion in Altenmünster has been created: over the next two and a half years, 1,350 buildings will be equipped with future-proof fibre-optic lines, thus opening up around 1,700 apartments and offices. For this purpose, the company miecom will lay new fiber optic cables over a total length of 32 kilometers in Altenmünster. With the so-called FTTH expansion (fiber-to-the-home), the use of copper cables is completely dispensed with and a continuous infrastructure made of fiber optics is set up. On this basis, bandwidths of up to 1 gigabit per second (= 1,000 Mbit/s) and even higher speeds in the future can be provided.
Construction work will start in the third quarter of this year. The first sections of the new network will be completed as early as 2023. Since 2012, miecom and M-net have continuously expanded and improved the digital infrastructure in Altenmünster as part of several fiber optic expansion projects. "The FTTH expansion that has now been agreed represents the final stage of expansion and creates the technological basis for future ever faster Internet connections," says Tobias Miessl from miecom. “We are very pleased to continue the successful cooperation with the municipality of Altenmünster, which has lasted for almost a decade. The districts of Zusamzell and Hegnenbach will be newly developed, as well as the town centre, which has not been supplied by miecom to date.”
Silvia Kleinscheck, Regional Manager, M-net: “With the FTTH expansion, the citizens and companies in Altenmünster are armed for the digital future. Because in contrast to all copper-based connection technologies, a pure fiber optic connection also masters the long-term requirements that we all face with the increasing digitization of our society."
Florian Mair, Mayor of Altenmünster, adds: “The future security of all our districts is very important to us. We are all the more pleased that we were able to win over two strong regional partners to strengthen Altenmünster as a residential and economic area for the future with a new high-speed network.”
Why fiberglass?
Rapid uploads and downloads, surfing without waiting while the page is loading or uninterrupted video streaming are just a few of the many advantages of a high-performance Internet connection. Fiber optic connections offer high and stable bandwidths and are particularly suitable for data-intensive applications. This also includes online gaming, storing and retrieving data in a cloud or using the connection in the home office.
In addition to the pure performance aspect, fiber optics have clear advantages over conventional transmission technologies. Data transmission via light is significantly more energy-efficient than connections based on copper cables. FTTH, for example, emits up to 90 percent less CO2 than the fastest DSL connection. M-net consistently exploits this ecological advantage and has been the first climate-neutral Internet provider in Germany since 2021.
With M-net TVplus, customers can order a full TV connection with over 100 (HD) TV channels and many extra functions via the fiber optic network from M-net and miecom, in addition to fast internet and inexpensive telephone services.
